Plan for the Integration

Depending on how
Clarity
and
Rally
are implemented in your organization, determine the integration option that best suits your implementation. The following sections help in the analysis and decision making.
Determine the Integration Type
The integration type determines whether you want to associate a
Clarity
project to portfolio items or investments in
Rally
. The following integration types are supported:
  • Portfolio Item integration
  • Investment integration
Portfolio Item Integration
With this integration type, you will be able to:
  • Link a single
    Clarity
project to a single parent portfolio item (such as an initiative) in
    Rally
    .
  • Auto-populate the corresponding child portfolio items (such as features) from
    Rally
    as tasks in
    Clarity
    .
  • Auto-populate the execution status of the corresponding
    Rally
    features to
    Clarity
    .
  • From a
    Clarity
project, monitor the execution status of the linked initiative.
    • You can only monitor two levels of portfolio items with this integration type. For example, you can monitor the progress of an initiative and its corresponding features.
    • For example, you can track the progress of an initiative and its corresponding features.
If you want to use this integration type, determine the parent portfolio item (such as initiative or epic) that you want to associate with the
Clarity
project. The tasks can only be associated with the lowest level portfolio item (such as feature).
Investment Integration
With this integration type, you will be able to:
  • Link a
    Clarity
    project to multiple
    Rally
    investments.
    • The investments can include features from multiple initiatives or any other parent portfolio item such as epic from
      Rally
      .
  • Auto-populate features from multiple initiatives that are associated with the linked investments, as tasks in
    Clarity
    .
  • Monitor multiple initiatives and multiple levels of portfolio items such as initiative, epic, feature, sub-feature, and so on from
    Clarity
    .
You can configure both types of integrations (portfolio item and investment) for the same
Rally
workspace; however, you can associate a
Clarity
project with only one integration type. With either integration type, user stories associated with features can also be auto-populated as subtasks in
Clarity
. Only those
Clarity
projects configured to sync user stories will auto-populate user stories from
Rally
.
Determine the Integration Direction
The integration direction determines the system from which the second-level portfolio item will be pulled. Depending on the system that you use for creating portfolio items (such as features), you can choose the integration direction. For example, if you create features in
Rally
, select the
Rally
to
Clarity
direction.
The option of selecting the integration direction is only available for the Portfolio Items integration type. For the Investment integration type, the direction is always from
Rally
to
Clarity
. If you are planning to use the Investment integration type, skip this section and proceed to Prepare for the Integration.
The following directions are supported for Portfolio Items integration:
  • Rally
    to
    Clarity
  • Clarity
    to
    Rally
  • BiDirectional
Irrespective of the direction you choose, the first level (for example, initiative) is always pushed from
    Clarity
    to
    Rally
. Similarly, user stories are always pulled from
    Rally
    to
    Clarity
    .
Direction Option 1:
Rally
to
Clarity
In this option, data between
Clarity
and
Rally
are synchronized as follows:
  • Clarity
projects are created as initiatives in
    Rally
    .
  • Features under the
    Rally
initiatives are created as tasks under the linked
    Clarity
    projects.
  • Status information is imported from the
    Rally
    portfolio items into the corresponding
    Clarity
    project and tasks.
Diagram depicting how the objects are synchronized in the Rally to Clarity direction
In this integration direction, the mapping of the
Rally
portfolio items to
Clarity
projects does not have to be contiguous to the portfolio items mapped to
Clarity
tasks. For example, if your portfolio item hierarchy in
Rally
includes initiatives, epics, and features, then you can map the items as follows:
  • Rally
    initiatives to
    Clarity
    projects
  • Rally
    features to
    Clarity
    tasks
In this example, you can skip mapping anything to the epic level portfolio item in
Rally
.
Direction Option 2:
Clarity
to
Rally
In this option, data between
Clarity
and
Rally
are synchronized as follows:
  • Clarity
projects are created as initiatives in
    Rally
    .
  • Selected tasks under the linked
    Clarity
projects are created as corresponding features under the
    Rally
    initiatives.
  • The project manager has access to status information imported from the
    Rally
    portfolio items into the corresponding
    Clarity
    project and tasks.
Direction Option 3: Bidirectional
In this option, data between
Clarity
and
Rally
are synchronized as follows:
  • Clarity
projects are created as initiatives in
    Rally
    .
  • Features under the
    Rally
initiatives are created as corresponding tasks under the linked
    Clarity
    projects.
  • Selected tasks under the linked
    Clarity
projects are created as corresponding features under the
    Rally
    initiatives.
  • The project manager has access to status information imported from the
    Rally
    portfolio items into the corresponding
    Clarity
    project and tasks.
At the end of this step, you must have determined the integration type and direction that you want to configure.
