Jitter and Latency QoS Calculation
Jitter and Latency QoS help us to find the response time of the host and analyze network performance. This section describes how the probe uses raw data to calculate Jitter and Latency QoS values.
Sample Point computation of latency and jitter for a destination IP (Host) from a machine (X) where probe is deployed:
  1. For every icmp_inter_packet_timeout interval, one 32-byte ICMP ECHO packet is sent to the host from the machine (X).
  2. Machine (X) waits for icmp_timeout and if no ICMP ECHO REPLY comes back, the packet is considered lost. Otherwise, it records the round_trip_latency. At the end of icmp_packet_count transmissions, Machine (X) has icmp_packet_count data points.
Of all the
icmp_packet_count
data points, some can be lost, which are called
icmp_lost_count
. Others are used for calculating
round_trip_latency
.
