Copy Monitoring Templates

After creating a monitoring template for a template-aware probe in Admin Console, such as vmware or xendesktop, you can use the following steps to copy the template to more instances of the probe. The newer, template-aware java probes maintain their configuration in JSON files that are compressed with Gzip. Configuration files (.cfg) are not used with template-aware probes.

After creating a monitoring template for a template-aware probe in Admin Console, such as vmware or xendesktop, you can use the following steps to copy the template to more instances of the probe. The newer, template-aware java probes maintain their configuration in JSON files that are compressed with
Gzip.
Configuration files (
.cfg
) are not used with template-aware probes.
Follow these steps:
  1. Locate the probe folder in
    $UIMHOME\probes\{
    probe category
    }\{
    probe name
    }\bulk_config\raw_template
    • Template files are named with a GUID for the template object. To identify the correct template file, create or rename them one at a time, or use
      gunzip
      to extract each template and search for your template title.
  2. Once you have identified the correct template file, extract it with
    gunzip
    and open it with a text editor. Use search and replace to replace every occurrence of the probe template GUID identifier with your desired template name.
  3. (Optional) If you do not want to allow users to change the template, add
    "readOnly":true
    to the
    ProbeTemplate
    JSON object inside the template file. Read-only templates can still be copied. for example:
    • {"ctdType":"ProbeTemplate","ctdType":"ProbeTemplate","customProperties":{
      "readOnly":true
      },"id":"VM_and_Host_Template","label":"VM and Host Template","probeName":"vmware","probeVersion":"6.41","typeName":"vmware6.41"}
  4. Save the edited template file with your desired template name.
  5. Use
    gzip
    to compress the file.
  6. Create a probe package in Infrastructure Manager.
    1. In Infrastructure Manager, select
      Archive
      , and right-click anywhere in the top right window.
    2. Select
      New…
      .
    3. Add the new, compressed template file to the
      Files
      tab, and specify the probe folder from Step 1 in the
      Path
      field.
    4. Save the new probe package.

  7. The new package containing the new template is now available to distribute to other probe instances from the archive.
