Installing

Describes the high-level steps to acquire, install, deploy, and configure your product.
Required roles: systems programmer, security administrator
Standard SMP/E installation and maintenance best practices are used to install and maintain
Broadcom
mainframe z/OS products. The installation process includes all the tasks that are typically performed by a systems programmer to acquire the products and make them ready for use in a production environment.
You can install
Broadcom
mainframe product software using IBM z/OSMF or native SMP/E batch processing.
z/OSMF is a web-based tool that automates and simplifies many installation activities on z/OS systems. z/OSMF makes obtaining and applying corrective, preventive, and recommended maintenance easier.
The following graphic provides a high-level overview of the installation process for
Broadcom
mainframe products: The bolded path indicates our best practice.
Installation Overview
This image shows the workflow for a system programmer to prepare for installation by addressing prerequisite software, security, and other requirements; and then acquire, install, and configure products and maintenance using z/OSMF or SMP/E JCL.
The following procedure describes the installation process in greater detail:
  1. Prepare for the installation by reviewing best practices and verifying that the software, hardware, security, and other installation requirements have been met.
  2. Acquire the product software from
    Broadcom Support
    using
    one
    of the following methods:
    • Download a z/OSMF portable software instance or PSWI (filename.zOSMF.pax.Z).
    • Download a classic SMP/E JCL package (filename.pax.Z).
If a z/OSMF package is not available, select the SMP/E JCL package. A z/OSMF package is
    not
    available for all products.
  3. Perform an SMP/E installation to install the product software using
    one
    of the following methods:
    • If you downloaded a z/OSMF package from
      Broadcom Support
, see Install Products Using z/OSMF.
    • If you downloaded a classic SMP/E JCL package from
      Broadcom Support
, see Install Products Using SMP/E JCL.
  4. Acquire the product solutions from
    Broadcom Support
    using
    one
    of the following methods:
    • Configure SMP/E Internet Service Retrieval to download and receive PTFs and ERROR HOLDDATA automatically.
    • Use the Create Service Order online interface to download and receive PTFs and ERROR HOLDDATA based on your order criteria automatically.
  5. Install maintenance using z/OSMF Software Update or SMP/E JCL.
For a comprehensive collection of articles that are dedicated to all mainframe maintenance concepts and procedures, see Mainframe Common Maintenance Procedures. To reduce hours of maintenance to just minutes, use
    SMP/E Internet Service Retrieval
    .
  6. Finalize the installation:
    • Configure your product.
    • Deploy your product.
For these tasks, use the methods that your product supports and in the preferred sequence per your site.
