VM Channel Path Load Analysis
The VM Channel Path Load Analysis report provides information about all active channels.
micsrm140
Only channels for which "busy" conditions occur are included. Channel paths provide the interface that allows for control units and I/O devices to be physically connected to the I/O subsystem.
Intended use
The report is designed to help analyze each channel path by path ID. For each ID, the type of path and the relative frequency with which the channel busy percentage was found in either of 10% ranges of 0-10, 11-20,..., 91-100. The report can help detect bottlenecks in the I/O subsystem caused by excessive path utilization.
Only FICON and ESCON channels are reported.
Format
A tabular listing that contains one line of information for each active channel configured during the reporting period. Report is ordered by descending %BUSY sequence (highest to lowest) and CHPID. In addition to the channel path ID, the following columns are shown on the report:
CHPID
Hexadecimal number of the channel path identifier.
CHAN-GROUP DESCR
Description of the channel model group as found in the Store-Channel-Path description.
CHAN-GROUP QUAL
The hexadecimal channel model group qualifier.
%BUSY CUR
Current percent channel busy calculated for the last interval of the hour.
%BUSY AVE
Average percent channel busy for the whole period since the last MONITOR RESET.
For FICON channels, the percent busy is calculated as the percentage of actual work unit utilization compared to the maximum possible value.
CHANNEL BUSY & DISTRIBUTION 0-10 thru 91-100
is the channel load distribution for each active channel. It is the relative frequency with which percent channel busy was found to be in the range.
An example of this report is shown in the VM Channel Path Load Analysis figure.

Calculations
For each channel within the hour, PC0_10 thru PC91_100 fields are accumulated to tell how many times Percent Channel Busy
IF CPMPCBSY LE nn THEN PCll_hh+1;
where ll = low range percent and hh = high range percent (e.g. PC11_20)
For the percentage of observations falling into a particular range of percent values, e.g. 30-39%, (PCTnn) of total CPMPCBSY during the whole period (time from last MONITOR RESET to current), the following calculation is used:
PCTnn=(PCll_hh/TOTSAMP*100)
where PCTnn is the percent range and TOTSAMP is the accumulated value of INTERVLS for each active channel within the hour
