MIXEDPW8 Record

The MIXEDPW8 record specifies that traditional LOGON passwords, passwords of 8-bytes or less in length, are to be managed in mixed case instead of uppercase (the default).
VM:Secure
will process traditional LOGON passwords exactly as they are entered by the user; or, as they are provided in the program stack or from a program. The MIXEDPW8 record has no operands or options, it is either specified or not specified.

MIXEDPW8
Description
If you specify the MIXEDPW8 record in the VMXRPI CONFIG file,
VM:Secure
will manage traditional LOGON passwords in mixed case. If the MIXEDPW8 record
is not
specified in the VMXRPI CONFIG file, VM:Secure will manage traditional LOGON passwords in uppercase;
VM:Secure
will uppercase the provided password, which is the default.
Processing and Implementation Considerations
  • To implement MIXEDPW8 processing, update the VMXRPI CONFIG file as indicated above. Then you
    must
follow the instructions in the Rules Facility Topic: Installing Access Control Interface Exits in the VM Control Program.
  • When you implement MIXEDPW8 processing:
    • All current LOGON passwords with a length of 8-bytes or less will exist in uppercase. Therefore, LOGON and other password prompts must be entered in uppercase until the password is changed.
    • After the password is changed, it will be stored and managed in mixed case.
  • If you implement MIXEDPW8 processing and you use a PASSWORD or PASSCHNG user exit:
    • These exits may no longer work as expected.
    • You will need to review, and if necessary, modify these exits to be compliant with your site requirements for managing LOGON passwords with a length of 8-bytes or less in mixed case.
  • MDISK LINK passwords will continue to be managed in upper case.
  • MIXEDPW8 processing can be used in combination with any supported
    VM:Secure
    password encryption type (PEF).
  • Special passwords NOPASS, NOLOG, LBYONLY, and AUTOONLY will continue to be managed in upper case.
  • Processing is not affected for Password Phrases, "passwords" 9-bytes or longer in length. Password Phrases are always managed in mixed case.
  • The output from the QCPCFG command has been changed to specifically state that the MIXEDPW8 record
    is
    or
    is not
    specified in your configuration.

PTF SO01787 must be installed and deployed before you can implement this support.
NOTE:
This update requires that you run the VMXCPG Utility to regenerate new VM:Secure CP TEXT file replacements after you have deployed it, then regenerating and deploying a new CP nucleus with these updated TEXT files. The VM:Secure server can temporarily run with this update deployed to the server code until you can IPL; passwords of 8-bytes or less in length will continue to be managed in upper case.
LOGON passwords will not be managed in mixed case until after you IPL.
If you are running a multi-member SSI Cluster, all members of the SSI Cluster must be IPL'd with this updated CP nucleus.
