Backup Now

Use the
Backup Now
tab of the
Host Version
page to perform on-demand backups.
For all file types, "month" is expressed in standard three-letter format. The following example shows the file name of a full backup:
db-backup.10.0.0-1.brightmail.Sep-06-22-10-04.full.manual.tar.bz2
Backup now parameter descriptions describes the parameters that you can configure to perform on-demand backups.
Host
Choose which system you'll be collecting the backup from in the
Host
drop-down menu. These choices determine the options available under
Backup Data
. The choices are: 
  1. Local Host
  2. Remote Quarantine Host

Item
Description
Full Backup
Backs up the complete database, including but not limited to the following items:
  • Spam Quarantine messages
  • Suspect Virus Quarantine messages
  • Spam submission submitter ID
  • Spam submission submitters list
  • Content filtering messages in Informational Incidents folders that are stored on disk
  • Content filtering messages in Quarantine Incidents folders stored on disk.
The file name format for this backup type is as follows:
db-backup.<product version>.brightmail.mmm-dd-yr-hr-mm.full.manual.tar.bz2
Quarantine Only Backup
Backs up the only the following following items, from a Control Center or a Quarantine:
  • Quarantine-specific configuration data
  • Spam Quarantine messages
  • Suspect Virus Quarantine messages
  • Content filtering messages in Informational Incidents folders that are stored on disk
  • Content filtering messages in the Quarantine Incidents folders that are stored on disk
Custom backup
When you select the
Custom backup
option the following sub-options appear:
  • Policies only
    Backs up spam, malware, reputation, and content filtering policies, Threat Defense policies, policy groups, and all policy resources.
    The file name format for this backup type is as follows:
    db-backup.<product version>.brightmail.mmm-dd-yr-hr-mm.policy.manual.tar.bz2
  • Configuration (includes policies)
    Backs up all configuration data (which includes all modifiable settings in the Control Center, the spam submission submitter ID, and the submitters list).
    The file name format for this backup type is as follows:
      db-backup.<product version>.brightmail.mmm-dd-yr-hr-mm.config-incidents-reports-logs.manual.tar.bz2
    You can also back up policies plus the additional items that you select as follows:
    • Include content incident messages
      In addition to configuration data and policies, backs up all of the messages that are in all of the content incident folders.
      The file name format for this backup type is as follows:
      db-backup.<product version>.brightmail.mmm-dd-yr-hr-mm.config-incidents.manual.tar.bz2
    • Include report data
      In addition to configuration data and policies, backs up all of the report data.
      The file name format for this backup type is as follows:
      db-backup.<product version>.brightmail.mmm-dd-yr-hr-mm.config-reports.manual.tar.bz2
    • Include log data
      In addition to configuration data and policies, backs up all of the log data.
      The file name format for this backup type is as follows:
      db-backup.<product version>.brightmail.mmm-dd-yr-hr-mm.config-logs.manual.tar.bz2
This option is not present when
Remote Quarantine Host
is selected from the
Host
field.
Store backup on server
Create and store the backup on the appliance.
If you are performing a backup on a quarantine only system from the Control Center, the backup will be stored on the quarantine only system, not the Control Center.
Store backup on a remote location using FTP/SCP
Create backups on the appliance, and then immediately send the backup to a remote computer using FTP/SCP.
Host/IP address
The fully-qualified domain name or IP address on which Symantec Messaging Gateway stores the backup by using FTP/SCP.
Port
A digit greater than 0 indicating the port number that is used for transferring data.
Path
The storage path for the backup file.
Requires authentication
Indicates if authentication is needed when you use this transfer protocol. Check to require authentication. If
Requires authentication
option is not selected, anonymous logon is attempted.
User name
Name of a user that is authorized to access the remote location.
Password
Password of a user that is authorized to access the remote location.
Backup Now
Click to begin the backup.
Cancel
Cancels the backup operation and returns you to the
Backup
page.
