Introducing Utility Appliance
PAM 3.5 adds Server Control functionality. To support this expansion, PAM is adding a new component to the overall architecture called the Utility Appliance.
The Utility Appliance is a virtual appliance itself does not require separate Broadcom licensing but is required for Server Control functionality. The Utility Appliance will host revamped Distribution Server software. This software is backwards compatible with PIM and PAM SC endpoint agents currently installed on Endpoints.
Similar to PIM and PAM SC, the Utility Appliance and the Distribution Software will sit between PAM and the Endpoints under Server Control management. This is necessary to ensure that scale is maintained and Endpoint load is distributed.

Unlike PIM and PAM SC’s Distribution Server, PAM 3.5 significantly optimizes the communication between both PAM to the Distribution Server as well as the Distribution Server to the Endpoints.
To best streamline the process for PAM Administrators, the Utility Appliance will be preloaded with the necessary software, but that software will not activate until the Utility Appliance is placed under management within PAM and placed into a Utility Group. This document explains that process in a few small steps.
